It is not a secret that the world’s most second popular drink, the CUBA LIBRE cocktail, is more than just rum and coke. Along with the Mojito and the Daiquiri, this particular drink shares the mystery of having a very unique and meaningful origin.
Take three minutes of your time to watch the video we have prepared for you and discover the secret of this popular drink.
Where does it come from?
It is generally said that CUBA LIBRE was born in La Havana in the middle of the Spanish – American War, a political conflict of ten weeks that had the objective of obtaining the independence of Cuba from Spain. President Roosevelt sent a large number of troops to the island. The American soldiers could not travel without their Cola, and they were the responsible ones to firstly introduced it into Cuba.
It was on one afternoon of 1898, when a group of American soldiers were gathered in the Old Havana to enjoy their day off, when suddenly their Captain, Kurt Russell, entered the bar, and ordered a mix that no one have ever had before, Gold rum, Coca- Cola on ice with a wedge of lime. The soldiers were quite amazed on the way their Captain was enjoying his drink. Thus, motivated by their curiosity and with the aim of having the same feeling of pleasure, they ordered the Bartender to prepare a round for everyone in the bar. One soldier suggested to celebrate the independence of Cuba as they toasted “Por CUBA LIBRE” (For the Freedom of Cuba), and the rest is history. The name stuck and nowadays this special drink of rum and coke is still known with the same name.
What is the secret of a CUBA LIBRE?
Captain Russell knew that a good CUBA LIBRE is more than just pouring rum and Coke in a glass with ice. By mixing the ingredients with happiness, in a specific order, and using a premium aged rum, the creation of a drink that transcends the simple rum and Coke is more than possible.
Scientists have proved that ice has a tendency of picking up the flavor of the first ingredient, it have contact with, thus the secret of the CUBA LIBRE is on seasoning the ice with the lime on the very first step.
